Cardi B recently clarified the meaning behind her viral lyric “like a Coach bag, baby this ain’t what you want” on her track “Like What (Freestyle).” While many fans interpreted the line as a diss towards Coach bags enthusiasts, Cardi revealed it was inspired by Cam’ron.
In a video shared online, Cardi explained that Cam’ron’s 2011 track “Hey Muma” influenced her to take a playful jab at Coach bags. She recounted how during her high school days, she wore Coach rain boots until Cam’ron’s song emphasized that New York women don’t rock Coach bags.
“In 2011, everybody started getting rid of their Coach s**t,” Cardi explained, shedding light on the cultural shift in fashion trends. “So when I was [recording] the song, that’s what I was thinking about.”
She emphasized that her lyric wasn’t about flaunting wealth but rather embracing New York culture. “I’m not trying to offend anybody. This is just some real New York s**t,” Cardi clarified, adding that she plans to buy a Coach bag herself.
Cardi’s revelation provides insight into the nuances of hip-hop culture and the influence of past artists on contemporary music trends.
