Coming into the Bills game I’m sure fans around the NFL believe there is something illegal about Patrick Mahomes playing in his 7th straight AFC Championship Game, 6 of them at Arrowhead. After witnessing 1 in my lifetime prior, this is pretty special. Mahomes is 16-3 in the playoffs in his career. Travis Kelce owns so many playoff records it’s not even funny. Andy Reid in another year will likely be the all time winningest playoff coach in history. The Chiefs have lost 1 game since Christmas of 2023 that they were trying to win. The Chiefs have 8 straight playoff wins coming into this game, that’s 3rd all time. Doing this in the salary cap era is simply astounding.

The Good

I was thrilled to hear Romo was on the call, I actually like him and realize many Chiefs fans don’t, but I’m thinking after dealing with Aikman last week the appreciation level has improved.

Our 1st offensive drive was perfect, I loved getting Hollywood involved early.

Justin Reid had an amazing read and tackle for a loss on an early 2nd down, sadly we gave up a 3rd and long to let the drive continue. Overall the defense played pretty well considering. The way we kept stopping the Tush Push was pretty remarkable, that was not something I expected at all. And the final Bills drive the defense clamped down and Spags did Spags things.

Our line played really well at pass protection which was a relief, but we really struggled to run the ball consistently.

Patrick Mahomes had an outstanding game and simply knows how to win, throwing for 245 yards and 1 touchdown and running for 43 tough yards and countless first downs as well as 2 more touchdowns. He made plays we’ve come to expect for him to make. Worthy had an outstanding game and has really come into his own. It was interesting to see two players the Bills traded the picks to us to select so kindly helping to knock them out yet again. Juju also had a big game with 2 very critical catches. So much for the offense not being able to score 30 points this year.

Remigio scares me each time he gets the ball for some reason, but he had another great return tonight. Special teams did what they needed it to do.

For anyone that complains about the dual possession catch by Worthy which was a catch by any definition of the rule, even if that’s overturned it’s not the Bills ball. Since Kelce was mauled to the point where Taylor was jealous we would have kept the ball regardless, the outcome was likely the same.

The Bad

I counted at least 6 turnover worthy plays the Bills had. The early two possible interceptions that 3 players got 2 hands on and the 4 Bills fumbles they recovered. Crazy how the ball bounces sometimes but if a couple of those go our way we are looking at a blowout.

I’d really like to see us develop a Tush Push of our own for next season, let one of the Tight Ends do it.

Kelce had one of the only drops we saw tonight, thankfully I don’t believe it stalled the drive.

Patrick taking one of his only 2 sacks to let us fall out of field goal range hurt a bit, but he and the line did a great job at avoiding pressure all game.

I was sitting there for much of the game wondering at what point we abandon the run? It seemed like for several series we only got 2 plays in a series since we would run into a wall and end up 2nd and 10 or 11 over and over.

James Cook was the Bills 2nd best player on the field tonight, maybe even the best. His reach when getting hit to score that 4th down touchdown was just insane. I’m not sure how time and again we left him alone to come out of the backfield and make catches.

It was actually interesting that the late facemask on Hunt may have hurt the Chiefs. It stopped the clock and also gave us 15 yards, making running out the clock there difficult. Thankfully things worked out.

Our offensive line only got beaten badly one time, but the timing was horrible, turning a 1st and goal into a 2nd and goal from about the 18.

At times I felt like we could not get off the field on 4th and 5 unless a Tush Push was involved, that was so frustrating, but Josh Allen is truly amazing.

The Ugly

We really need our defensive backs to catch balls they get both hands on. Sure we got the eventual punt anyway, but 3 players had 2 hands on a football with a solid chance to make an interception. Cook and Johnson were the 2 main ones involved in this and Cook did it twice.

Shame to see Binford knocked out of the game the way he did. You hate to see a player get hurt, especially with the head being involved again.

Patrick had two quick fumbles, the first one was overturned on a penalty, the second one essentially was somewhere between a 10-14 point swing and we were already in scoring range. It appeared he pulled the ball out to keep it himself but it seemed to get stuck on Pachecho’s fingers somehow. This game isn’t even close if that doesn’t happen. I’ve never been a fan of the run pass option with this team for that very reason.

I’m still a bit confused about the Bills challenge. Normally if you get a play off you don’t get to challenge and I certainly didn’t hear a whistle to stop the play, but at least we got another play out of the whole thing.

Justin Reid needs to not go offside for an extra point. Do that against the Eagles and their Tush Push will give them 2.

So I don’t believe the officials impacted this game one way or another and I would have said that even if the Chiefs lost, but for the Chiefs get all the calls crowd, a missed facemask call would have put the Chiefs into field goal range, so 3 points there, a missed false start on the Bills allowed them to score, maybe 4 points there, and calling a false start on the Chiefs when the defense clearly jumped first put the Chiefs in a 3rd and 15 instead of a 3rd and 5. Normally I say little about officials, but enjoy those 3 examples to share with the whiners and keep holding your heads high. There were more but those were the most glaring.

I was a bit concerned about our clock management on our 2nd to last drive. I’d love to see us milk 6 minutes off the clock, move down the field and end the game by kicking a field goal. That would have been way easier on millions of hearts too.

Pachecho really needs more awareness at the end of the game. It may not be talked about but him going out of bounds instead of shouldering the defender and staying in bounds made the Chiefs have to get one more 1st down to ice the game. If he stays in bounds I think the game is over at that point.

Looking ahead

The Chiefs are the early -1.5 favorites in the Super Bowl which somewhat surprises me.

This will be Patrick Mahomes 5th finals in 6 seasons. No one in the NFL has ever done that before. The only worthy comparison is MJ. That’s pretty rare air.

Watching the Fox Pregame show the Eagles fans are truly the worst there is. They essentially had to cut sound for much of the show because Eagles fans just wanted to yell obscenities at them. These are the same people who booed Santa Claus and threw batteries covered in snowballs at opposing teams. I’m so grateful for the Kingdom, now we get a shot at them once again.

A quick look ahead to next year. With the Raiders adding Pete Carroll that will mean that 3 teams in the division have Super Bowl winning head coaches. The 4th, Jim Harbaugh has been to a Super Bowl and won a College National Title. I don’t think there is a better group of coaches in a division in the game, and I doubt there have been many times in the history of the game where the quality has been that high. Hopefully Andy just keeps dominating them.

REMINDER: Just a reminder that KC has already made history (once again). It’s the FIRST team in NFL history to, as a Back-Champ, make it to the Superbowl. The previous two-champs, failed to make it to the big game.
